KONDEY

Where the White-Tailed Tropicbird Calls Home

The White-tailed Tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus), locally known as “dhandifulhu dhooni,” is a beautiful seabird found in the Maldives, especially in Ga. Kondey, Gaafu Alifu Atoll. With its white plumage and long tail feathers, it gracefully glides over the ocean while hunting fish and squid.

Kondey’s coastal environment provides an ideal nesting habitat. During breeding season, these birds display elaborate courtship behaviors and form strong pair bonds. Protecting their nesting sites is vital to preserving Kondey’s unique natural heritage.

TARO FARMING

Where the Roots of Kondey Run Deep

Taro farming in Ga. Kondey reflects a long-standing agricultural tradition rooted in the island’s land and way of life. Taro has been cultivated in the Maldives for generations, valued for its ability to adapt to the local climate and soil.

In Kondey, traditional farming knowledge has been passed down through families, connecting generations to the land. Beyond providing nourishment for the community, taro has also formed part of local cultural practices and celebrations.

While farming methods have evolved over time, taro remains a meaningful symbol of resilience, tradition and connection to Kondey’s roots.
