The Journey Back to Kondey
Evacuation of the Island (1960s)
Under the Population Consolidation Policy implemented during President Ibrahim Nasir’s administration, residents of many small islands were encouraged or required to relocate to larger, more developed islands. The policy aimed to centralize essential services such as education and healthcare and make them more accessible and efficient.
As part of this policy, the residents of Kondey were evacuated from the island and relocated to other islands.
Second Evacuation of Kondey (1970)
In September 1970, under the continued implementation of the Population Consolidation Policy, the remaining residents of Kondey were completely evacuated from the island and relocated to GA. Dhaandhoo.
Returning to the Island (1975)
After years away from their homeland, the people of Kondey made persistent efforts to return to their island. Their determination eventually led the government to grant permission for them to resettle Kondey in 1975.
Celebrating April 12 as Independence Day
Since their return, the people of Kondey have commemorated April 12 as their special “Independence Day.” The day marks their return to their homeland and symbolizes the freedom and determination they regained by resettling their own island.
